Soma (Indu) in relation to Indra (Indra-Soma complex)

Chandas

Triṣṭubh (probable; verify)

This six-verse hymn invokes Soma (Indu) as the energizing, bull-like force that enters Indra and makes his power irresistible in battle and in winning wealth. It asks that non-offerers (those who do not press Soma) be checked, and that the gains and delights of the rite flow to the true celebrants, as they did for the ancient seers.

Mantras

Mantra 1

Be exhilarated for our greater seeking; O Indu, the Bull, enter into Indra. Rushing in thy impetuous movement, thou drivest forward; thou findest no enemy near—so may the luminous essence make our will invincible.

Mantra 2

In him set our utterances—who alone stands for the peoples. Following his own law of being, he is pressed forth, like barley well-ground, the Bull that makes the energies ready for the work.

Mantra 3

He in whose hands are all treasures of the five peoples—make them manifest for us. And whoever strikes against us, smite him like a divine thunderbolt; let the luminous power protect the right work and scatter the assailing darkness.

Mantra 4

Smite the one who does not press, the equalizing spoiler who gives not thy joy. But to us grant his portion of gain; even a lord of wealth must yield it—so the right delight may not be withheld from the seeker.

Mantra 5

Thou hast helped—he whose double-strength is established continuously in the chants. In the battle, O Indu (Soma), thou hast further helped the racer of Indra in the plenitudes of force.

Mantra 6

As thou wast to the former singers, O Indra—like pleasant waters that do not fail the thirsty—so following that same revealing word (nivid) I call thee: may we find the impulsion and the victorious plenitude, O giver swift in bounty.

Frequently Asked Questions

It asks Soma to empower Indra so that the worshippers gain victory, protection, and prosperity, and that the benefits of the rite come to the true offerers.

The asunvant is the one who does not press/offer Soma—symbolically, a person who refuses the sacrificial duty and yet seeks equal share; the hymn asks that such obstruction be removed.

In Vedic ritual thought, Soma is the energizing ‘juice’ that intensifies Indra’s strength; together they represent inspired power that wins battles and secures abundance for the community.
