Shloka 6.114.18

रावणस्य अन्त्येष्टिः — Ravana’s Funeral Rites and the Ethics of Post-War Conduct

इन्द्रियाणिपुराजित्वाजितंत्रिभुवनंत्वया ।स्मरद्भिरिवतद्वैरमिन्द्रियैरेवनिर्जितः ।।।।

indriyāṇi purā jitvā jitaṃ tribhuvanaṃ tvayā |

smaradbhir iva tad-vairam indriyaiḥ eva nirjitaḥ ||

Formerly, by conquering your senses, you had as it were conquered the three worlds. But now, it is as though those very senses—remembering their old enmity—have defeated you.

"In the past by winning your senses you gained the three worlds. Now it seems as though the senses have recollected and taken their grudge. You have lost control over your senses, thereby you are killed by your enemy."

It presents self-mastery (indriya-jaya) as a foundation of Dharma: even great external success is unstable if one loses inner restraint.

It warns that unchecked desires can return with greater force; abandoning truth and restraint allows one’s own senses to become the cause of downfall.
