Arjuna’s Rapid Advance and the Bhīma–Śakuni Encounter
द्रोौणिपाण्डवयोरेवं वर्तमाने महारणे । वर्धमाने च राजेन्द्र द्रोणपुत्रे महाबले
drauṇipāṇḍavayor evaṁ vartamāne mahāraṇe | vardhamāne ca rājendra droṇaputre mahābale ||
Sañjaya said: “O king, as this great battle between Droṇi (Aśvatthāmā) and the Pāṇḍavas continued in this manner, and as the mighty son of Droṇa grew ever more formidable, the conflict intensified.”
संजय उवाच
The verse underscores how unchecked martial momentum and rising prowess in war tend to intensify violence; it frames the ethical tension of kṣatriya valor—strength and duty—against the escalating cost of conflict.
Sañjaya reports to King Dhṛtarāṣṭra that the great battle is continuing between Aśvatthāmā (Droṇa’s son) and the Pāṇḍavas, and that Aśvatthāmā’s power is increasing, heightening the struggle.
