Mantra 1
अग्निः। अभ्यऽर्चत सुष्टुतिं गव्यमाजिमस्मासु भद्रा द्रविणानि धत्त । इमं यज्ञं नयत देवता नो घृतस्य धारा मधुमत् पवन्ताम्
To Agni sing ye forth good praise: bestow on us the cattle-prize, the race’s gain; lay in us auspicious riches. Lead ye this sacrifice of ours, O Gods; let honeyed streams of ghee flow on.
Mantra 2
मय्यग्रे अग्निं गृह्णामि सह क्षत्रेण वर्चसा बलेन । मयि प्रजां मय्यायुर्दधामि स्वाहा मय्यग्निम्
In me, first, I take Agni—together with ruling power, with splendour, with strength. In me I set offspring, in me I set life: svāhā! in me be Agni.
Mantra 3
इहैवाग्ने अधि धारया रयिं मा त्वा नि क्रन् पूर्वचित्ता निकारिणः । क्षत्रेणाग्ने सुयममस्तु तुभ्यमुपसत्ता वर्धतां ते अनिष्टृतः
Here, even here, O Agni, hold fast the treasure: let not the fore-plotting deceivers strike thee down. With ruling power, O Agni, be there good control for thee; let thine attendants increase, uninjured.
Mantra 4
अन्वग्निरुषसामग्रमख्यदन्वहानि प्रथमो जातवेदाः । अनु सूर्य उषसो अनु रश्मीननु द्यावापृथिवी आ विवेश
After the Dawns did Agni first show forth his front; after the days, Jātavedas, first-born in might. After the Sun, after the Dawns, after his rays, he entered in—yea, into Heaven and Earth he passed.
Mantra 5
प्रत्यग्निरुषसामग्रमख्यत् प्रत्यहानि प्रथमो जातवेदाः । प्रति सूर्यस्य पुरुधा च रश्मीन् प्रति द्यावापृथिवी आ ततान
Toward the Dawns did Agni show his foremost face; toward the days stood Jātavedas first in power. Toward the Sun’s rays, manifoldly spread, he reached; toward Heaven and Earth he stretched himself abroad.
Mantra 6
घृतं ते अग्ने दिव्ये सधस्थे घृतेन त्वां मनुरद्या समिन्धे । घृतं ते देवीर्नप्त्य१आ वहन्तु घृतं तुभ्यं दुह्रतां गावो अग्ने
Ghee is for thee, O Agni, in thy heavenly seat; with ghee doth Manu kindle thee this day. Let the divine maidens, the descendants, bring thee ghee; let the cows, O Agni, milk forth ghee for thee.
It is primarily a prosperity (paustika) hymn: it strengthens Agni and the sacrifice so that cattle-wealth, prize/victory gains, and auspicious riches accrue to the patron.
Ghṛta is the central oblation that feeds Agni; the hymn treats abundant, sweet-flowing ghee as the mechanism by which the yajña becomes effective and prosperity—especially dairy and cattle increase—manifests.
Dawn or early morning is especially fitting because the hymn links Agni with Uṣas and Sūrya; it is also appropriate at the beginning of an offering sequence when kindling and stabilizing the fire.
