Inside Sukta 14

How it unfolds

  1. Where it opens

A direct liturgical call to the Adhvaryus to bring and pour Soma for Indra, emphasizing that he constantly desires this drink (RV 2.14.1).

  2. Development

Indra is praised through remembered exploits—his slaying and his securing/protecting of allied heroes and lineages—establishing him as the reliable champion for the sacrificers (e.g., RV 2.14.7).

  3. Climax

Indra’s overwhelming martial power and patronage are presented as the decisive ground for calling him to the rite: the Soma is offered precisely because he is the victorious protector who acts.

  4. Where it settles

The hymn ends in a petition for Indra’s abundant giving—wealth, sustaining power, and enduring fame—so the community may speak the ‘vast word’ in assemblies, strengthened with heroic force (RV 2.14.12).

The deity: Indra

  • In the VedaIndra is celebrated as the mighty Vṛṣan (Bull) who loves the Soma-drink, breaks obstacles, wins battles, and upholds the worshipper through protection and gifts. He is invoked as a heroic, choice-willed lord who responds to well-pressed Soma and true praise.
  • Cosmic functionChampion of ṛta in the dynamic sphere—releasing energies, overcoming hostile powers, and enabling prosperity, rain, and victorious order for the community.
  • Inner significanceThe awakened force of courage and decisive will: the inner power that breaks inertia, dispels fear, and turns inspired energy (Soma) into effective action and success.

The seer

  • Gṛtsamada (Āṅgirasa)Āṅgirasa (Angiras lineage; traditionally linked with the Bhṛgu–Āṅgiras priestly stream) · Principal seer of much of Maṇḍala 2, renowned for powerful Indra and Agni praises framed for the Soma sacrifice, with a direct liturgical voice addressing the officiants.

Attributes of the deity

  • Soma-beloved (somapā)
  • Vṛṣan (bull-like vigor)
  • Slayer of foes and breaker of obstruction
  • Protector and ally of seers and heroes
  • Bestower of wealth, fame, and strength
  • Responsive to ritual precision and praise

Also by this seer

  • Rig Veda Maṇḍala 2 is largely attributed to Gṛtsamada (notably many hymns to Agni and Indra).
  • Associated with shaping early Soma-ritual praise-poetry (stotra style) emphasizing Indra’s vīrya (heroic powers) and dāna (generosity).

The rite, step by step

  • Prepare the Soma with proper pressing (using pressing-vessels) and filter/clarify the juice as the ‘intoxicating essence’.
  • Adhvaryu brings the Soma to the offering place and pours it out as an oblation for Indra.
  • Recite praise highlighting Indra’s heroic deeds and his protection of allied heroes (to ‘activate’ the deity’s vīrya).
  • Conclude with a direct request for wealth, sustaining power of giving, and lasting fame in the assembly (vidatha).

Offerings

  • Pressed Soma (andhaḥ), poured/oblated for Indra
  • Accompanying praises (stotra/śastra) as the verbal offering

Frequently Asked Questions

It is a Soma-offering hymn to Indra: the priests are urged to bring and pour Soma, Indra’s victories are praised, and blessings of wealth, strength, and fame are requested.

Because Soma is the key ritual offering that ‘invites’ Indra and empowers his heroic action; the hymn says Indra is a constant lover of the Soma drink and willingly chooses it.

It asks Indra to ready abundant gifts and sustaining wealth, and to give the worshippers lasting renown so they can speak powerfully in the community assembly and thrive with heroic strength.
