Vibhuti Yoga

Bhagavad Gita 40 illustration

नान्तोऽस्ति मम दिव्यानां विभूतीनां परन्तप । एष तूद्देशतः प्रोक्तो विभूतेर्विस्तरो मया ॥ १०.४० ॥

nānto 'sti mama divyānāṁ vibhūtīnāṁ parantapa | eṣa tūddeśataḥ prokto vibhūter vistaro mayā || 10.40 ||

O Parantapa (scorcher of foes)! There is no end to My divine manifestations. This vastness of My vibhūtis has been spoken by Me only in brief, by way of indication.

हे परन्तप! मेरी दिव्य विभूतियों का अन्त नहीं है। यह विस्तार मैंने केवल संकेत रूप से कहा है।

There is no end to my divine manifestations, O scorcher of foes. This expanse of manifestations has been stated by me only by way of indication.

Text is stable across recensions. The main interpretive point concerns method: Krishna presents examples as illustrative rather than exhaustive, implying an open-ended theology of manifestation.

FAQs

It can encourage intellectual humility: any conceptual list of what is valuable or sacred is partial, inviting openness rather than rigid categorization.

The divine is presented as inexhaustible in expression; the world’s excellences are not separate from, but indicative of, an unlimited source.

This verse closes Krishna’s catalog of vibhūtis by clarifying that the preceding examples are representative.

It supports pluralism in appreciation: excellence in diverse domains (ethics, art, science, nature) can be viewed as meaningful without forcing a single narrow template.
