The Greatness of Śraddhā and Devī’s Question to Śiva
bāhyamābhyaṃrtaraṃ caiva bhajanaṃ bhavapūrvakam | na bhāvarahitaṃ devi vipralaṃbhaikakāraṇam | kṛtakṛtyasya pūtasya mama kiṃ kriyate naraiḥ | bahirvābhyaṃtaraṃ vātha mayā bhāvo hi gṛhyate

It teaches that Shiva is pleased primarily by bhāva (sincere inner devotion). Rituals without heartfelt intent become spiritually barren and can even deepen the sense of distance from Shiva.
Whether one worships Shiva as the Liṅga through external pūjā or contemplates Him inwardly as Saguna/antaryāmin, the decisive factor is devotion. The Liṅga-pūjā becomes fruitful when it expresses true bhāva rather than mechanical observance.
Perform external pūjā (water, bilva, bhasma, mantra) or inner japa/dhyāna with steady feeling; especially chant the Pañcākṣarī “Om Namaḥ Śivāya” with sincere surrender, making bhāva the core of practice.
