Concept: Kārya-kāraṇa-niyama in applied astrology: outcomes depend on graha + sthāna (planet + house/division).

Application: In chart interpretation, treat Mars in the 8th as a red-flag placement; weigh Sun/Saturn/Mercury more positively in the stated placements and apply conditional beneficence for others.

FAQs

This verse imparts jyotiṣa-vidyā: a rule of horoscopic judgement about which planets are considered auspicious or inauspicious when placed in specific houses/divisions—especially noting Mars as unfavorable in the 8th, while Sun, Saturn, and Mercury are praised in the stated placements.

Alongside ritual, dharma, and other sciences, the Agni Purana also preserves applied astrology (jyotiṣa) as a practical decision-making tool—summarizing planet-by-house rules used for interpreting character, longevity, marriage, and misfortune indicators in a natal chart.

In karmic terms, the verse frames planetary placements as indicators of past actions ripening into favorable or difficult results; recognizing inauspicious combinations (e.g., Mars in the 8th) supports remedial choices (dāna, vrata, mantra, śānti) aimed at reducing suffering and aligning conduct with dharma.
