Chapter 17 — सृष्टिविषयकवर्णनम्
An Account Concerning Creation
तस्मिन् जज्ञे स्वयं ब्रह्मा स्वयम्भूरिति नः श्रुतम् हिरण्यगर्भो भगवानुषित्वा परिवत्सरम्
tasmin jajñe svayaṃ brahmā svayambhūriti naḥ śrutam hiraṇyagarbho bhagavānuṣitvā parivatsaram
在那原初境况中,梵天(Brahmā)自生而出——我们如是听闻——即福德自在的“金胎”主(Hiraṇyagarbha),在其中安住满一整年。
Lord Agni (narrating Purāṇic cosmology to Sage Vasiṣṭha)
Vidya Category: {"primary_vidya":"Cosmology","secondary_vidya":"Philosophy","practical_application":"Explains Brahmā’s emergence as Svayambhū/Hiraṇyagarbha and the ‘one-year’ incubation motif, used to teach cyclic time and the maturation of creation.","sutra_style":true}
Encyclopedic Reference: {"reference_type":"Description","entry_title":"Svayambhū Brahmā (Hiraṇyagarbha) Dwelling for a Year","lookup_keywords":["Svayambhū","Brahmā","Hiraṇyagarbha","parivatsara","incubation"],"quick_summary":"Within the cosmic egg, Brahmā arises as Svayambhū—Hiraṇyagarbha—remaining within for a full year, indicating a gestational period before differentiated creation unfolds."}
Alamkara Type: Arthāntaranyāsa (supporting statement ‘thus we have heard’)
Concept: Creation is not instantaneous differentiation; it includes a latent phase (parivatsara) wherein the creator-principle (Hiraṇyagarbha) abides before manifesting multiplicity.
Application: In sādhanā and study, value ‘incubation time’: allow understanding and intention to mature before outward action.
Khanda Section: Cosmogony / Sarga (Creation Narrative; Hiranyagarbha-Brahma origin)
Primary Rasa: adbhuta
Secondary Rasa: shanta
Visual Art Cues: {"scene_description":"Inside or atop the golden egg, Brahmā as a luminous being begins to appear, seated in meditation, suggesting a year-long stillness before creation proceeds.","kerala_mural_prompt":"Kerala mural, cross-section of golden egg with inner glow, Brahmā seated in yogic posture, stylized ornaments, deep blues and ochres, sacred calm.","tanjore_prompt":"Tanjore, Brahmā with ornate crown and halo emerging from a golden egg, heavy gold embossing, rich maroons and greens, devotional iconography.","mysore_prompt":"Mysore, refined linework: Brahmā in meditation within an oval ‘aṇḍa’ frame, subtle gold highlights, didactic cosmology illustration.","mughal_miniature_prompt":"Mughal miniature, cutaway view of a golden egg, a serene figure seated within, fine detailing and soft washes, marginal notes/cartouches."}
Audio Atmosphere: {"recitation_mood":"contemplative","suggested_raga":"Bhairavi","pace":"slow","voice_tone":"contemplative"}
Sandhi Resolution Notes: स्वयम्भूरिति = स्वयम्भूः + इति; भगवानुषित्वा = भगवान् + उषित्वा; हिरण्यगर्भो = हिरण्यगर्भः (visarga-lopa).
Related Themes: Agni Purana 17 (Hiraṇyagarbha sequence); Agni Purana time/cycle discussions (kalpa, manvantara)
It conveys cosmological doctrine (sarga-vidyā): Brahmā as Svayambhū arising from Hiraṇyagarbha, and the symbolic “one-year” (parivatsara) period marking a complete cosmic cycle of gestation/manifestation.
By preserving a standard Purāṇic cosmogony (Hiraṇyagarbha → Svayambhū Brahmā) and a time-unit motif (parivatsara), it exemplifies how the Agni Purāṇa compiles theology, cosmology, and traditional chronography alongside its many practical disciplines.
Contemplation of Brahmā’s self-born emergence from the cosmic germ supports a creation-centered worldview, encouraging reverence for the divine origin of order (dharma) and the cyclic sanctity of time (the completed annual cycle).
