Scene: Devī respectfully petitions Īśvara to narrate the complete catalogue of earth’s sin-destroying and auspicious tīrthas; a didactic, court-like divine dialogue setting.
Tīrthas are upheld as instruments of purification and auspiciousness, worthy of systematic remembrance and teaching.
The verse speaks generally of all earthly tīrthas; specific sites begin to be named in the following verses.
None directly, but the focus implies pilgrimage acts traditionally linked with tīrthas (darśana, snāna, śravaṇa).
