तच्छुत्वा कुरुवृद्धो हि बली संवृतलोचन: । शनैरुद्वीक्ष्य सस्नेहमिदं वचनमब्रवीत्
tac chrutvā kuru-vṛddho hi balī saṃvṛta-locanaḥ | śanair udvīkṣya sa-sneham idaṃ vacanam abravīt ||
Sañjaya nói: Nghe những lời ấy, Bhīṣma—bậc trưởng lão nhà Kuru, dũng lực phi thường, mắt vẫn khép—chậm rãi mở mắt và nhìn lên đầy ân tình. Thấy nơi ấy vắng lặng, ngài cho lính canh lui ra, rồi dùng một tay ôm Karṇa với tình thương như cha ôm con. Sau đó ngài nói những lời này.
