jamadagniruvāca | avikreyā mahārāja sāmānyāpi hi gauḥ smṛtā | kiṃ punarhomadhenuryā prabhāvairīdṛśairyutā
Jamadagni
Type: kshetra
Listener: King
Scene: Jamadagni cites tradition: a simple cow is unsellable; the homadhenu radiates subtle sacrificial power, with faint motifs of fire and offerings reflected in her aura.
Dharma places certain beings and supports of yajña beyond commerce; sacred utility and sanctity outrank profit.
The broader chapter belongs to a tīrtha-glorifying section, but this verse specifically glorifies dharma connected to yajña and the homadhenu rather than naming a site.
The verse implies the yajña context (homa) by naming the homadhenu; the rule stated is ethical/ritual propriety: such a cow is not for sale.
