ध्यानप्रकारनिर्णयः / Determination of the Modes of Meditation
on Śrīkaṇṭha-Śiva
तथा शुभाशुभं कर्म ध्यानाग्निर्दहते क्षणात् । अत्यल्पो ऽपि यथा दीपः सुमहन्नाशयेत्तमः
tathā śubhāśubhaṃ karma dhyānāgnirdahate kṣaṇāt | atyalpo 'pi yathā dīpaḥ sumahannāśayettamaḥ
Suta Goswami
Tattva Level: pasha
Shiva Form: Dakṣiṇāmūrti
Significance: Reorients merit-making from external acts to inner dhyāna; suggests that the ‘real tīrtha’ is the mind purified by contemplation of Śiva.
Role: teaching
Offering: dipa
It teaches that Shiva-oriented meditation (dhyāna) functions like a purifying fire that rapidly reduces karmic bondage—both “good” and “bad”—leading the seeker toward liberation beyond dualities.
Meditation on Shiva—often supported by Linga-upāsanā (form-based focus)—steadies the mind; when concentration becomes one-pointed, inner darkness (avidyā) is dispelled, just as a lamp removes darkness.
Practice steady dhyāna on Lord Shiva (commonly with japa of the Panchakshara, “Om Namaḥ Śivāya”); even a small, consistent practice can dissolve deep-seated ignorance and karmic impressions.
