गंगा कस्मात्किमाकारा कुतः सा ह्यतिपावनी । व्यास उवाच । शृणुध्वं कथयाम्यद्य कथां पुण्यां पुरातनीं

gaṃgā kasmātkimākārā kutaḥ sā hyatipāvanī | vyāsa uvāca | śṛṇudhvaṃ kathayāmyadya kathāṃ puṇyāṃ purātanīṃ

“گنگا کو گنگا کیوں کہا جاتا ہے؟ اس کی صورت کیا ہے، اور وہ نہایت پاک کرنے والی ندی کہاں سے ظاہر ہوئی؟” ویاس نے کہا: “سنو؛ آج میں ایک قدیم اور مقدس کتھا بیان کرتا ہوں۔”
