The Liberation of the Lizard
Godhā-vimukti
जीमूतवाहनो राजा पुरासीत्क्षितिमंडले । तेनापि जीवितं दत्तं पन्नगाय वरानने ॥ ६७ ॥
jīmūtavāhano rājā purāsītkṣitimaṃḍale | tenāpi jīvitaṃ dattaṃ pannagāya varānane || 67 ||
اے وراننے، قدیم زمانے میں زمین پر جیموتواہن نام کا ایک راجا تھا؛ اس نے بھی ایک سانپ کو زندگی کا دان دیا۔
Suta (narrating to the sages at Naimisharanya; verse addresses a listener as 'varānane')
Vrata: none
Primary Rasa: karuna
Secondary Rasa: adbhuta
It highlights dharma grounded in compassion: the highest merit is to protect life, even of a serpent, showing universal benevolence as a purifying virtue praised in tirtha-mahatmya contexts.
By presenting selfless protection of living beings as a devotional disposition—compassion and non-harm support a sattvic life that aligns the devotee with Vishnu-centered dharma, even when the verse itself is narrative.
No specific Vedanga (like Vyakarana, Jyotisha, or Kalpa ritual rules) is taught directly; the practical takeaway is ethical conduct (ahimsa/karuna) as a foundation for successful vrata, dana, and tirtha practice in Purana literature.
