The Liberation of the Lizard
Godhā-vimukti
विषवृद्धिं करोत्येव तद्वत्पापकृतं भवेत् । परित्यजेमां त्वं पापां गच्छावो नगराय वै ॥ ५३ ॥
viṣavṛddhiṃ karotyeva tadvatpāpakṛtaṃ bhavet | parityajemāṃ tvaṃ pāpāṃ gacchāvo nagarāya vai || 53 ||
Narrator (contextual dialogue within Uttara-Bhaga; specific speaker not explicit in the provided single verse)
Vrata: none
Rasa: {"primary_rasa":"shanta","secondary_rasa":"bibhatsa","emotional_journey":"A sharp moral simile (sin grows like poison) culminates in urgent counsel: abandon the sinful path and depart for the city."}
It teaches that sin is self-propagating—like poison that only grows when fed—so spiritual progress requires decisively abandoning sinful actions and choosing a corrective, dharmic direction.
Bhakti is supported by inner and outer purity; the verse implies that continuing in pāpa obstructs devotion, so one should renounce sinful tendencies to become fit for remembrance and worship of the Divine.
The takeaway aligns with Dharmic application rather than a technical Vedanga: ethical discipline (sadācāra) and avoidance of pāpa are prerequisites for fruitful mantra, ritual observance, and pilgrimage practices.
