The Description of the Index (Anukramaṇikā) of the Padma Purāṇa
Narada (addressing a Vipra in the anukramanika-style narration)
Vrata: none
Primary Rasa: vira
Secondary Rasa: bhakti
The verse frames the remembrance/hearing of Rama’s Aśvamedha and royal consecration as “svarga-bestowing” and as a purifier that destroys sins, highlighting the Purāṇic principle that sacred narratives and dharmic acts generate punya and cleanse pāpa.
By elevating Rama’s sacred deeds as spiritually transformative to hear and contemplate, the verse supports bhakti through śravaṇa (devotional listening) and smaraṇa (remembrance) of the Lord’s dharmic līlā, which purifies the heart.
It points to Śrauta-ritual knowledge (yajña practice) implicit in the Aśvamedha and to rājyābhiṣeka procedures (consecration rites), connecting Purāṇic narration with Vedic ritual frameworks rather than grammar or astrology in this specific line.
