Skanda Purana — Prabhasa Khanda, Shloka 56

क्षयपुष्ट्यर्थविद्वेषकर्मभिः शांतिकादिभिः । पालयंति महीं यस्मान्महीपालास्ततः स्मृताः

kṣayapuṣṭyarthavidveṣakarmabhiḥ śāṃtikādibhiḥ | pālayaṃti mahīṃ yasmānmahīpālāstataḥ smṛtāḥ

เพราะกษัตริย์ทั้งหลายคุ้มครองแผ่นดินด้วยพิธีกรรมเช่นศานติและกิจอื่น ๆ เพื่อขจัดความเสื่อม เพิ่มพูนความอุดมสมบูรณ์ เกื้อหนุนสวัสดิภาพ และต้านทานความพยาบาท จึงถูกจดจำว่าเป็น ‘มหีปาละ’ ผู้พิทักษ์แว่นแคว้น
