Tattva Level: pasha
Shiva Form: Vaidyanātha
Sthala Purana: General principle: pratibandha (impediment) admits niṣkṛti (remedial expiation) after examining śakuna (omens). This mirrors Śaiva ritual manuals where doṣa is diagnosed and śānti/pravṛtti is prescribed before main rite.
Role: nurturing
It teaches that obstacles (pratibandha) to dharma and Shiva-sadhana are not merely external; they are corrected through conscious purification (niṣkṛti), restoring fitness for grace (anugraha) and steady practice.
Before commencing Linga worship and other Saguna forms of Shiva-upasana, one should remove impediments through appropriate remedial rites so the worship becomes śuddha (pure), focused, and fruitful.
It suggests beginning with a preliminary assessment of signs/omens and then performing the suitable prāyaścitta—such as purification, vows, mantra-japa (e.g., Panchakshara), and preparatory observances—before the main Shiva rite.
