Educational Q&A

Honor should align with merit and dharma. The verse contrasts outward reverence (given to please a revered person) with inner worthiness, warning that a corrupt mind neither deserves nor can properly value true respect.

Vaiśampāyana addresses Kṛṣṇa (Acyuta), explaining that Arjuna was publicly honored to satisfy Kṛṣṇa; however, the speaker condemns another person as unworthy—calling him evil-minded and a disgrace—who cannot rightly appreciate or sustain the honor associated with that reception.
