Kālajñāna (Knowledge of Time) and Mṛtyu-cihna (Signs of Death): Śiva’s Instruction to Umā
pārvatyuvāca | bhagavaṃstvatprasādena jñātaṃ me sakalaṃ matam | yathārcanaṃ tu te deva yairmaṃtraiśca yathāvidhi
Parvati
Tattva Level: pati
Shiva Form: Umāpati
Significance: Frames worship (arcana) as the practical means by which the bound soul (paśu) approaches Pati through Śiva’s grace (anugraha), a theme echoed at all Jyotirliṅga kṣetras.
Shakti Form: Pārvatī
Role: teaching
It shows that right knowledge matures through Shiva’s grace, and then naturally turns into a desire for disciplined practice—learning the proper mantra and method of worship to deepen devotion and purify the soul (paśu) toward Shiva (Pati).
Parvati’s request is specifically about arcana performed by vidhi and mantra—hallmarks of Saguna Shiva worship, commonly centered on the Shiva-Linga, where devotion is expressed through prescribed offerings and recitation rather than abstract contemplation alone.
The verse points to mantra-guided Shiva-arcana performed “according to rule” (yathāvidhi)—implying disciplined puja with authorized mantras; in Shaiva practice this typically aligns with japa (often of the Panchakshara) alongside orderly worship procedures.
