क्रौञ्चशरणागमनम् तथा बाणासुरवधः
Krauñca Seeks Refuge; Slaying of Bāṇāsura
चिक्षेप तां समुद्दिश्य प्रलंबं गिरिजासुतः । महाशब्दो बभूवाथ जज्वलुश्च दिशो नभः
cikṣepa tāṃ samuddiśya pralaṃbaṃ girijāsutaḥ | mahāśabdo babhūvātha jajvaluśca diśo nabhaḥ
Sūta Gosvāmin (narrating to the sages at Naimiṣāraṇya)
Tattva Level: pati
Shiva Form: Vīrabhadra
Role: destructive
Cosmic Event: Directional quarters and sky blazing—cosmic portent accompanying divine weapon-release
It portrays the irresistible force of divine śakti acting through Girijā’s son: when dharma is empowered by Śiva–Śakti, even the cosmos responds—sound, space, and the directions tremble—signifying the purification of hostile forces (āsuric tendencies) within and without.
Though the scene is martial, it is Saguna devotion in action: Skanda’s power is understood as arising from Śiva’s grace and the Śiva–Śakti principle. Remembering such līlās supports Linga-worship by strengthening faith that the Lord’s manifest power protects devotees and upholds cosmic order.
A practical takeaway is japa of the Pañcākṣarī (“Om Namaḥ Śivāya”) with steady breath and focused intent (saṅkalpa), contemplating the inner ‘weapon’ of mantra that burns impurities—like the blazing directions described—supported by simple Śaiva disciplines such as bhasma (tripuṇḍra) and devotion.
