The Maruts’ power is presented as both cosmic and intimate: their dynamic order compels the worlds and can be invited to move within the worshippers as energizing truth-force.

  4. Where it settles

The hymn closes with belonging and blessing: there is gladness with the Maruts, and the worshipper seeks to live the full span of life sustained by their exultant energy (1.37.15).

The deity: Maruts

  • In the VedaThe Maruts are the youthful, many-formed storm-gods who ride shining chariots, roar like thunder, flash with lightning, and move in disciplined companies (śardha). They are praised as fierce yet beneficent allies who bring rain, clear obstacles, and intensify the sacrificial fire and heroic spirit.
  • Cosmic functionThey animate the atmosphere with wind, storm, thunder, and rain, strengthening the cosmic order (ṛta) through dynamic movement and purifying force, often supporting Indra in the release of waters and the defeat of obstructive powers.
  • Inner significanceThey symbolize the surge of inspired energies—courage, clarity, and collective uplift—that shake inertia and fear, driving the mind and life-force into right rhythm and forward motion aligned with truth (ṛta).

The seer

  • KaṇvaKaṇva (Kaṇva gotra/lineage) · A prominent early Rigvedic seer whose family hymns are especially known for vivid, energetic praise of the Maruts and Indra, and for a poetic style that blends martial vigor with devotional intimacy.
