Mantra Efficacy, Removal of Obstacles, and the Role of Faith/Discipline
Suta Goswami
Tattva Level: pashu
Shiva Form: Liṅgodbhava
Sthala Purana: General liṅga-dharma: a liṅga that has received proper arcana becomes a valid focus for continued worship; alternatively, one may establish and worship a new liṅga according to vidhi.
Significance: Teaches that desired fruits are blocked by moha (delusion) and procedural deviation; emphasizes continuity of worship through an already-arcita liṅga, supporting steadiness (niyama) and śraddhā.
Offering: pushpa
It teaches that spiritual fruit is not gained through confused desire and ignorance; one must approach Shiva with right understanding and steady devotion, using proper supports of worship such as the Liṅga.
The Liṅga is affirmed as a valid saguna support for devotion: worship should be directed to a properly worshipped/established Liṅga, or a new Liṅga should be worshipped with personal sincerity and correct observance.
It implies disciplined Liṅga-pūjā—either continuing worship of a duly worshipped Liṅga or undertaking one’s own worship of a new Liṅga—ideally supported by mantra-japa (e.g., the Panchākṣarī) and purity of intent.
