ଯେହେତୁ ଏହି ଜଳାଶୟ ‘ଶଶ’ ସହ ଯୁକ୍ତ ହୋଇ ପାନ କରାଗଲା, ଏବଂ ଶଶଚିହ୍ନଧାରୀ ଚନ୍ଦ୍ର ମଧ୍ୟ ଏହାକୁ ପାନ କଲେ; ତେଣୁ ଏହା ‘ଶଶାପାନ’ ନାମରେ ପ୍ରସିଦ୍ଧ ହେବ।
