Compelling a pledged person to handle corpses, feces, urine, or leftovers; bathing them naked; sending them for corporal punishment; and transgressing against them—these acts destroy the ‘value’ (i.e., the pledged-service valuation) in the case of women, and they constitute grounds for release (mokṣa) for wet-nurses, attendants/maids, half-sītikā workers, and medical attendants.
To define enforceable bright-line prohibitions against abusive labor practices; the law converts certain humiliations/assaults into measurable legal consequences (loss of valuation and/or release).
These roles are socially sensitive and essential; Kautilya provides heightened protection and clear exit rights to prevent exploitation and to maintain public order and legitimacy.
