FAQs

It preserves a standard Purāṇic cosmographic motif: the systematic cataloging of dvīpas and their relative dimensions, reflecting how premodern Sanskrit literature organized geographical and cosmological knowledge into a structured schema.

Śālmala-dvīpa and Kraunca-dvīpa are named as cosmographic ‘continents’ within Purāṇic world-models; they are generally treated by scholars as mytho-cosmological regions rather than directly mappable modern locations.

The verse primarily conveys descriptive cosmology rather than a direct ethical injunction; its philosophical instruction is attentive learning and transmission of ordered knowledge (nibodhata: “understand carefully”).
