Varaha Purana 188.30 — Adhyaya 188, Shloka 30

Section on the Origin and Procedure of Piṇḍa-Rites and Śrāddha: Rules of Mourning Impurity

Aśauca

एवं दत्तेन प्रीयन्ते प्रेतलोकगता नराः ॥ अदत्वा प्रेतभागं तु भुङ्क्ते यस्तत्र मानवः ॥

evaṃ dattena prīyante pretalokagatā narāḥ | adatvā pretabhāgaṃ tu bhuṅkte yas tatra mānavaḥ ||

Dengan persembahan yang diberikan demikian, insan yang telah pergi ke alam preta dikatakan menjadi puas. Namun sesiapa yang makan di situ tanpa terlebih dahulu memberikan bahagian untuk yang telah meninggal (pretabhāga) adalah bertentangan dengan tatacara upacara.
