Suta Goswami

Tattva Level: pashu

Shiva Form: Sadāśiva

Sthala Purana: Not tied to a single shrine; it prescribes pavitrāropaṇa (protective/auspicious thread or garland installation) and maṇḍala construction as periodic rites in Śiva worship.

Significance: Pavitra rites are widely observed in Śiva temples as a ‘renewal’ of sanctity and protection; maṇḍalas stabilize ritual space, supporting focused worship and removal of obstacles.

FAQs

It teaches that devotion becomes steady through time-bound observances—installing pavitras and preparing maṇḍalas as disciplined acts of bhakti. In Shaiva Siddhanta, such regulated worship purifies the pashu (bound soul) and aligns it toward Pati (Śiva) through sacred order (ācāra).

Pavitra-āropaṇa and maṇḍala-vidhi are external supports for Saguna worship—adoration of Śiva in the Liṅga with visible, consecrated aids. These rites sanctify the worship-space and offerings, making the devotee’s approach to the Liṅga more focused and ritually complete.

Perform pavitra-āropaṇa (placing consecrated sacred threads/garlands) in Āṣāḍha/Uttarāṣāḍhā timings and prepare maṇḍalas in Śrāvaṇa for Śiva-pūjā. While doing so, maintain mantra-japa—especially the Pañcākṣarī “Om Namaḥ Śivāya”—to internalize the outer ritual.
