The Awakening of Kumbhakarna
तांप्रविश्यगुहांरम्यांशुभांकाञ्चनकुट्टिमाम् ।।।।ददृशुर्नैरृतव्याघ्रंशयानंभीमविदर्शनम् ।
tāṁ praviśya guhāṁ ramyāṁ śubhāṁ kāñcana-kuṭṭimām | dadṛśur nairṛta-vyāghraṁ śayānaṁ bhīma-vidarśanam ||
Setelah memasuki gua yang indah itu—mulia lagi berlantai hamparan emas—mereka melihat sang “harimau” kaum Rākṣasa sedang terbaring tidur, ngeri dipandang.
The Rakshasas entered the beautiful residence of Kumbhakarna which was one yojana on all sides with huge gates, taking fragrant garlands and foods (to wake up Kumbhakarna) from where they were pushed out by the breath of Kumbhakarna. The Rakshasas endowed with mighty strength pushed their way into the residence of Kumbhakarna and entered.
Outer splendor and fearsome power are morally neutral; dharma asks how such power will be used—toward protection and justice or toward oppression.
The attendants finally reach the inner chamber and behold Kumbhakarṇa asleep within a richly adorned dwelling.
The verse mainly emphasizes vīrya (formidable might) as an attribute—setting the stage for the ethical question of its application.
