yatrādhikṛtya śakunīndharmādharmavicāraṇam | purāṇaṃ navasāhasraṃ mārkaṇḍeyaṃ taducyate

जे पुराण पक्ष्यांना आधार करून धर्म-अधर्माचा विचार करते, तेच नवसहस्र श्लोकांचे ‘मार्कण्डेय’ म्हणून प्रसिद्ध आहे।
