śrīmārkaṇḍeya uvāca | tato gacchenmahīpāla paraṃ tīrthacatuṣṭayam | yeṣāṃ darśanamātreṇa sarvapāpakṣayo bhavet
Śrī Mārkaṇḍeya
Tirtha: Tīrtha-catuṣṭaya on Revā (Kaubera–Vāruṇa–Yāmya–Vāyavya)
Type: kshetra
Listener: Mahīpāla (king)
Scene: Sage Mārkaṇḍeya instructs a king to proceed to a supreme quartet of tīrthas on the Narmadā; the river glows as a purifying boundary while pilgrims move in a deliberate circuit.
Pilgrimage is transformative: certain tīrthas are so potent that even darśana alone is said to erase sin.
A “tīrtha-catuṣṭaya” (fourfold set of tīrthas) in the Revā Khaṇḍa; the names are introduced in the following verse.
A directive to go (gacchet) and obtain darśana of the four tīrthas.
