tatastuṣṭo mahādevaḥ parayā kṛpayā nṛpa | pratyakṣadarśī bhagavānuvāca kṣitinandanam
Śiva (Mahādeva)
Tirtha: Aṅgāraka Tīrtha
Type: kshetra
Listener: Mahārāja (king)
Scene: Mahādeva manifests before the ascetic Aṅgāraka on the Narmadā bank—radiant, compassionate, with matted locks and crescent moon; the river and sky witness the epiphany.
Sincere devotion culminates in Śiva’s direct grace (pratyakṣa-anugraha), where compassion precedes divine instruction and boons.
The Revā (Narmadā) sacred geography is the frame; the chapter proceeds to a particular tīrtha where Śaṅkara is established and worship yields great merit.
This verse itself introduces a direct divine encounter; later verses in the passage prescribe snāna (bathing) and pūjā at the tīrtha.
