Viṣṇu’s Hymn and the Petition for Śiva–Satī’s Protection
brahmovāca | ityuktvā priya viṣṇurmāṃ tadā viṣṇuvacaḥ smaran | iyeṣa haṃtuṃ brahmāṇaṃ śūlamudyamya śaṃkaraḥ
Brahma
Tattva Level: pati
Shiva Form: Rudra
The verse highlights Śiva as Pati—the supreme governor who restrains cosmic pride and disorder. Śiva’s raised trident symbolizes the corrective power of dharma that subdues ego and restores harmony among even the highest deities.
Śaṅkara’s decisive action presents Saguna Śiva as the accessible, active Lord who protects cosmic balance. In Linga worship, devotees approach this same regulating presence—beyond rivalry and limitation—seeking purification of अहंकार (ego) and steadiness in devotion.
A practical takeaway is to calm ego and agitation through japa of the Pañcākṣarī—“Om Namaḥ Śivāya”—and to meditate on Śiva’s Trishula as the inner power that cuts the three impurities (āṇava, karma, māyā) and establishes clarity.
