Sukta 5.15

Devata

Agni

How it unfolds

  1. Where it opens

A solemn ‘bringing forth of speech’ to Agni as the wise, knowable seer of ancient glory, shining with ghee.

  2. Development

Agni’s power expands: he is ever-newly born in cycles, spreads vast strength, and becomes unapproachable to foes.

  3. Climax

Agni surges forward like an angry lion, forcing adversaries to keep their distance—protector at the peak of his might.

  4. Where it settles

Agni is affirmed as the wide foundation of divine wealth and the secret step in the cave, awakening great plenitude and bringing Atri across darkness.

The deity: Agni

  • In the VedaAgni is the wise disposer (vedhas), the kavi (seer-poet), “to be known,” shining when anointed with ghee, benevolent yet formidable—an asura in the older Vedic sense of a lord of power.
  • Cosmic functionMediator between humans and gods through sacrifice; carrier of offerings, kindler of divine presence, and protector who repels harm while establishing prosperity and order.
  • Inner significanceThe awakened fire of consciousness—discernment, aspiration, and inner heat (tapas) that transforms obscurity into clarity and releases hidden plenitude.

The seer

  • Atri (Atriya)Atrigotra (Atriyas) · One of the great Vedic seer-families; celebrated for luminous, Agni-centered hymns and for the Atri legend of being brought out of obscurity by divine help (often connected with light/fire symbolism).
