Shiva Form: Sadāśiva
The verse highlights that true spiritual stature is not merely physical valor (vīrya) but refined understanding (dhī) oriented toward devotion (bhakti). In Shaiva reading, it supports the Purana’s broader teaching that sincere devotion and right reflection purify the bound soul (paśu) and prepare it for the grace of the Supreme Lord (Pati), even when that devotion is expressed toward Viṣṇu.
Though it names Viṣṇu-bhakti, the Shiva Purana often presents devotion as a universal purifier that culminates in realization of the Supreme. Such passages harmonize sectarian forms: devotion to a saguna form trains the mind in single-pointedness, which in Shaiva Siddhanta ripens into receptivity to Shiva’s anugraha (grace), the ultimate liberating power.
The implied practice is bhakti supported by vicāra—steady devotional remembrance along with contemplative discernment. As a Shaiva takeaway, one may pair daily japa of the Pañcākṣarī (“Om Namaḥ Śivāya”) with reflective study of scripture, cultivating devotion that is thoughtful rather than mechanical.
