The verse underscores the volatility of war and the ethical pressure of public witness: even the mightiest can be suddenly overpowered, and a leader’s duty is sharpened when events unfold before the eyes of allies and enemies alike. It highlights kṣatriya responsibility to respond decisively to protect one’s forces and uphold honor amid crisis.
Sañjaya reports a battlefield shock: a rākṣasa has physically seized/overpowered Bhīma during combat, and this happens openly—before all the troops and even before the addressed hero’s eyes—intensifying the urgency and the humiliation/risk implied by such a capture.
