yadi na syur mānuṣeṣu kṣamiṇaḥ pṛthivī-samāḥ | na syāt sandhir manuṣyāṇāṁ krodha-mūlo hi vigrahaḥ ||
Yudhiṣṭhira said: If, among human beings, there were no forgiving persons—steadfast like the earth itself—then reconciliation among people would never be possible. For the root of conflict is anger.

Forgiveness (kṣamā) is essential for social harmony: without patient, earth-like forbearance, no lasting reconciliation (sandhi) can occur, because anger is the primary source of disputes.
Yudhiṣṭhira reflects on human conduct and governance, emphasizing that peace-making depends on the presence of forgiving individuals who can absorb offenses without escalating them into conflict.
