Draupadī’s Lament and the Question of Kṣatriya Forbearance
vā jama hartr̥śa tejasāivopagacchati | lokaḥ sarpād veśmagatādiva, yo upakārī manuṣyāṁś ca corāṁś ca saha api uttejanāyuktaṁ vyavahāram eva karoti; tena sarve lokāḥ tathā udvignā bhavanti yathā gṛhe nivāsinaḥ sarpeṇa |
Prahlāda said: Even one who is capable of helping others, if he approaches people with mere heat of temper and behaves in an agitating, provocative way—even toward ordinary folk and even toward thieves—makes everyone uneasy. People become disturbed by him just as the residents of a house are alarmed by a snake living within it.
