Kuvalāśva’s Lineage and Uttaṅka’s Petition concerning Dhundhu (धुन्धु-प्रसङ्गः)

Vaiśampāyana said: The king ordered his charioteer, “Drive me quickly!” When thus commanded, the charioteer addressed the king: “After this, one day King Śala went to the forest to hunt. There he saw a fierce beast and pursued it from his chariot, saying to the driver, ‘Quickly bring me near the deer!’ The charioteer replied, ‘O King, do not insist on capturing this creature; it cannot be caught by you. If your chariot were yoked with the two left-turning (vāmya) horses, then you would catch it.’ Hearing this, the king demanded, ‘Charioteer, tell me who the vāmya horses are—otherwise I will kill you at once!’ The charioteer trembled in fear; yet if he revealed the horses’ identity, he also feared the curse of the sage Vāmadeva. So he said nothing. Then the king again raised his sword and threatened, ‘Speak quickly, or I will kill you now!’ Terrified, the charioteer finally said, ‘O King, the sage Vāmadeva has two horses called “vāmya”; they are as swift as the mind.’ The episode highlights how royal anger and coercion can drive a person into a conflict of duties—fear of immediate violence versus fear of violating a sage’s sanctity—showing the ethical peril of impulsive power.
