Cyavana’s Sacrifice and the Aśvins’ Soma Dispute

Lomaśa uvāca: etad eva yadā vākyam āmr̥ḍayati devarāṭ | anādṛtya tataḥ śakraṁ grahaṁ jagrāha bhārgavaḥ ||

Lomaśa said: When the lord of the gods (Indra) kept repeating these very words again and again, the Bhārgava (Cyavana), disregarding Śakra, seized the Soma-offering portion in order to allot it to the Aśvin twins. The episode highlights a sage’s steadfastness in what he deems just, even when opposed by divine authority.

Educational Q&A

Moral authority grounded in perceived fairness can stand firm even against higher power: Cyavana prioritizes what he considers rightful inclusion (a Soma share for the Aśvins) over Indra’s repeated objections, illustrating resolve in dharma as one understands it.

Indra repeatedly insists on his position, but Cyavana (the Bhārgava) ignores him and physically takes the Soma-portion (graha) to assign it to the Aśvin twins, marking a confrontation between a sage’s ritual decision and the king of the gods.
