Akṛtavraṇa said: “You must eat it with care and effort.” Having said this, the sage disappeared from sight. But the two women reversed the intended procedure—mixing up the embracing of the tree and the eating of the sacrificial porridge (caru)—thereby turning the rite’s outcome upside down. The episode underscores how negligence or confusion in a dharmic act, especially a vow or ritual meant to shape destiny, can distort results and bring unintended consequences.
