(Gaṅgādhāraṇa) — Śiva Bears the Descent of Gaṅgā

lomasha uvāca | etac chrutvā vaco rājño gaṅgā lokanamaskṛtā | bhagīratham idaṃ vākyaṃ suprītā samabhāṣata ||

Lomasha said: Hearing the king’s words, the Gaṅgā—revered by all the worlds—became greatly pleased. She then addressed Bhagiratha with these words. The episode frames Bhagiratha’s plea as an act of filial duty and compassionate responsibility: the liberation of the ancestors depends upon a righteous effort joined to sacred means.

Educational Q&A

Righteous perseverance in service of one’s ancestors (pitṛ-dharma) is praised: sincere effort, humility, and devotion can move even cosmic powers, and sacred means (Gaṅgā’s purifying waters) are linked with ethical responsibility toward family and lineage.

After Bhagiratha’s request, Lomasha reports that the universally revered Gaṅgā is pleased by the king’s words and begins to reply—marking the turning point where the river-goddess responds to his plea.
