Vyāsa said: “This grief for your son has arisen and blazes like a fire. O noble one, extinguish it—again and again—by the water of discernment, so that it is quenched for good.”
व्यास उवाच
Grief, though natural, should be cooled and mastered through prajñā—clear understanding and reflective discernment—just as fire is quenched by water. The verse urges repeated inner practice, not a single momentary effort.
In the Stree Parva’s aftermath of the war, Vyāsa addresses a bereaved noble person overwhelmed by the loss of a son, comparing that sorrow to a blazing fire and prescribing wisdom as the means to pacify it.
