Dhṛtarāṣṭra’s Collapse and Vyāsa’s Counsel
evaṃ te vartamānasya loke kīrtir bhaviṣyati | dharmārthaḥ sumahāṃs tāta taptaṃ syāc ca tapaś cirāt ||
If you conduct yourself in this way, your fame in the world will grow. You will gain a very great attainment of dharma and artha, and you will also receive the fruit of long-performed austerity.
Right conduct brings lasting social honor (kīrti) and also secures both dharma (moral-religious good) and artha (legitimate welfare/prosperity); ethical action is presented as equivalent in value to long austerities, yielding their fruit.
Vyāsa addresses the listener as 'tāta' and commends a particular course of conduct, assuring that such behavior will increase renown in the world and lead to the attainment of dharma and artha, along with the merit normally gained through prolonged tapas.
