Battlefield Lament and Gāndhārī’s Curse

Vaiśampāyana said: “Unrecognized, unnoticed among people, you will wander like one without refuge. O Madhusūdana, you will meet your end by a disgraceful means. When your thirty-sixth year arrives, your own kinsmen, ministers, and sons will turn upon one another and perish in mutual strife. Then, unknown to all and hidden from the eyes of the world, you will roam in the forest like an orphan and finally attain death through a condemned course.”
The verse underscores the ethical law of consequences: when leadership and kinship bonds collapse into adharma—especially through internal strife—status and recognition vanish, and a shameful end can follow. It warns that power and fame are fragile when sustained by blameworthy means.
Vaiśampāyana reports a grim prediction addressed to Madhusūdana (Kṛṣṇa): in the thirty-sixth year, his own relatives, ministers, and sons will destroy one another in fighting; afterward he will live unrecognized, wandering in the forest like an orphan, and will die through a censured method.
