Vaiśampāyana said: Then again he questioned the charioteer Sañjaya, son of Gāvalgaṇa, asking him to relate the events exactly as they had occurred. In the wake of ruin and grief, the king’s insistence on an accurate account underscores the moral weight of war’s consequences and the human need to confront truth even when it deepens sorrow.

Educational Q&A

Even amid overwhelming grief, one must face events as they truly happened (yathā-tatham). The verse highlights the ethical value of truthful reporting and the sobering necessity of confronting the consequences of one’s choices in war.

The narrator Vaiśampāyana states that the king again questions Sañjaya, the charioteer and eyewitness-reporter, asking him to recount the battle news accurately and in proper sequence.
