Sañjaya said: Then all of them became downcast and frightened—like timid little deer. Duryodhana’s ministers, and King Jayadratha as well, were seized by fear and dejection, their confidence shaken amid the pressure of the battle.

The verse highlights how fear and loss of confidence can rapidly overtake even powerful leaders and their councils in crisis. Ethically, it underscores that reliance on force and pride without inner steadiness and righteous grounding leads to collapse of morale when adversity strikes.
Sañjaya reports that Duryodhana’s ministers and King Jayadratha become dejected and terrified, compared to timid deer. It marks a moment of psychological setback for the Kaurava side amid the intense fighting.
