Arjuna said: Some practitioners offer the senses—beginning with hearing—into the fires of self-restraint; others offer the objects of sense—beginning with sound—into the fires of the senses. In this way, different yogins enact inner sacrifice: either by withdrawing the faculties into disciplined control, or by meeting sense-objects with purified, regulated perception so that desire is consumed rather than fed.

Educational Q&A

Spiritual practice can be framed as inner yajña: either restraining the senses by offering them into the fire of discipline, or engaging sense-objects in a purified way so craving is burned up rather than increased.

In the Gītā dialogue on the battlefield, Arjuna is hearing about various forms of sacrifice; this verse describes two yogic modes of inner sacrifice involving senses and their objects.
