Dhyāna-Yoga
Discipline of Meditation and Mental Restraint
cāturvarṇyaṁ mayā sṛṣṭaṁ guṇa-karma-vibhāgaśaḥ | tasya kartāram api māṁ viddhy akartāram avyayam || na māṁ karmāṇi limpanti na me karma-phale spṛhā | iti māṁ yo 'bhijānāti karmabhir na sa badhyate ||
The fourfold social order—brāhmaṇa, kṣatriya, vaiśya, and śūdra—was brought forth by me, distinguished according to the distribution of qualities and the kinds of work they perform. Yet, though I am the source of that ordering, know me as truly non-doing and imperishable. Actions do not stain me, nor do I crave the fruits of action. Whoever understands me in this truth is likewise not bound by actions. Ethically, the teaching redirects Arjuna from anxiety about role and consequence toward disciplined duty without possessiveness, grounded in insight into the Lord’s transcendence.
